What is Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy?

Understanding the term

At Jordan Speech-Language Therapy, we are proud to provide neurodiversity-affirming speech, language, and feeding therapy for children in Chicago and nearby communities. But what does that mean? Simply put, neurodiversity-affirming therapy respects and values neurological differences, recognizing that every child’s brain works uniquely—there is no single “right” way to communicate, think, or learn.

Neurodiversity includes cognitive variations such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others. Instead of focusing on “fixing” or “normalizing” differences, our pediatric speech therapy in Chicago embraces each child’s strengths, accommodates challenges, and prioritizes autonomy and well-being.

At Jordan Speech-Language Therapy, we take a child-centered, evidence-based approach that supports neurodivergent children and their families. Below are our guiding principles for neurodiversity-affirming practice.

1. Strengths-Based Focus

We highlight what each child can do rather than what they can’t. By building on strengths, we create a foundation for meaningful communication and self-expression.

2. Respecting Communication Preferences

Every child has the right to communicate in the way that works best for them. Whether through spoken language, gestures, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), or echolalia, we validate and support all forms of communication.

3. Gestalt Language Processing Support

For children who are gestalt-language processors (such as scripting or echolalia), we provide specialized strategies to help them develop natural language in a way that aligns with their strengths and needs.

4. Supporting Autonomy and Self-Advocacy

We empower children by respecting their sensory preferences, providing choices, and encouraging self-advocacy—focusing on connection, not compliance.

5. Caregiver Collaboration and Education

We work closely with families, offering guidance, answering questions, and providing tools to support therapy strategies at home.

6. Accommodating Sensory and Motor Needs

Many neurodivergent children experience sensory processing challenges. Our therapy environment is designed to be comfortable, engaging, and sensory-friendly to ensure the best possible experience.

7. Rejecting Harmful Practices

We do not use therapies that encourage masking, suppress natural behaviors, or force eye contact. Instead, we honor each child’s individuality and support authentic, meaningful communication.

By taking a neurodiversity-affirming approach, we ensure that children feel seen, heard, and valued. Our goal is not to change who they are but to empower them to communicate confidently and comfortably.
